Your Instagram page is not your website

Why Nigerian businesses that sell on social media still need a proper website, and what a good one should do for you.

Many of the best businesses we know in Nigeria run almost entirely on Instagram, WhatsApp and TikTok. They have loyal customers, good products and real sales. So the question we hear most often is fair: if social media is working, why bother with a website?

Because social media is where people discover you. A website is where they decide to trust you.

You don’t own your page

Your followers, your posts and your reach all live on someone else’s platform, under someone else’s rules. An algorithm change can cut your reach overnight. A hacked account or a mistaken ban can wipe out years of work in an afternoon. A website on your own domain is the one address that stays yours, whatever happens to the apps.

Customers check before they pay

When a new customer is about to send money to a business they have never bought from, they look for proof. A clean website with your name, what you do, past work and a way to reach you answers the question every buyer is quietly asking: is this business real? It does that even while you sleep.

Google can’t send people to an Instagram grid

When someone searches for a fashion store in Owerri or a web designer in Port Harcourt, Google shows websites. Social profiles rarely rank for the searches that bring buyers. A website with good search optimisation lets people who have never heard of you find you at the exact moment they are looking.

What a good business website should do

  • Say what you do in one sentence, right at the top, in words your customers use.
  • Show proof: products, past work, reviews, your registration details if you have them.
  • Make the next step obvious: order, book, pay, or message you on WhatsApp in one tap.
  • Load fast on a phone, on mobile data, because that is how most of your customers will see it.
  • Be easy to find, with proper titles, descriptions and a sitemap so search engines understand it.

Keep your social media, point it home

None of this means leaving social media. It means giving every post, bio and story a destination. Put your website link everywhere, and let social media do what it does best: bring people to your door.

Social media starts the conversation. Your website closes it.
